SAN DIEGO — San Diego Padres star outfielder Fernando Tatis Jr. said he may not return from a stress injury to his right femur until after the All-Star break.
Tatis was placed on the 10-day injured list on Monday after dealing with the injury for virtually the entire season.
“It’s going to take some time. We tried to target it after the All-Star break, but we’re talking about something serious in my bone. It can get worse and we don’t want that,” he said when asked about the timeline for his return.
Tatis has been dealing with what had been described as a quadriceps injury. Manager Mike Shildt said the team discovered the damage a few days ago after studying and clarified that the outfielder could play, but that he will not improve without rest.
The Dominican did not play on Saturday or Sunday.
He leads the Padres with 14 home runs and won the National League Gold Glove and Platinum Glove last year in his first season in right field.
Shildt also said Yu Darvish is dealing with elbow inflammation and will not start Tuesday night against the Washington Nationals as planned. He is on the disabled list with a groin strain.
Rookie Adam Mazur was recalled from Triple-A El Paso to start Tuesday night. The Padres also recalled Dominican infielder Eguy Rosario from Triple-A and selected the contract of outfielder Bryce Johnson. They sent Dominican right-hander Jhony Brito and Venezuelan outfielder José Azócar to Triple-A.
