Russian President Vladimir Putin and the acting president of Iran, Mohammad Mojber, debated this Wednesday about cooperation between both countries after the signing of a strategic memorandum for the supply of Russian gas to the Persian nationaccording to the Kremlin.

“In particular, special satisfaction was expressed for the successful progress of the energy cooperation and the implementation of large-scale infrastructure projects,” the Russian Presidency said in a statement.

Hours earlier, the Russian gas giant Gazprom reported on the signing of a memorandum with the Iranian National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) within the framework of the visit to the Islamic republic of a delegation led by its general director, Alexei Miller, who met with Mojber in Tehran.

This memorandum, described as “revolutionary” by the Iranian authorities, provides for the supply of Russian gas to the Persian nation.

According to the Kremlin, both leaders also discussed other key branches of cooperation between Moscow and Tehran.

Additionally, Miller met with Iranian Oil Minister Javad Oji, with whom he discussed the necessary steps to implement the newly signed memorandum. This is the second visit this year by the directors of the Russian gas giant to Iran, where Gazprom has a representative office.

On the other hand, Vladimir Putin “wished the people of Iran a successful presidential election and stressed their security in “Russian-Iranian friendly relations will continue to deepen.”.

Early presidential elections in Iran will be held on June 28, following the death of Iranian President Ebraim Raisi in a helicopter crash in East Azerbaijan province on May 19.

On June 13, Putin had a phone call with Mojber and emphasized the need to increase cooperation in the energy and transportation sectors. In this regard, the Russian president called for the “full implementation” of their bilateral agenda, which also aims to further strengthen their trade relations, according to the semi-official Iranian news agency. More.

Putin gave special importance to the ‘International North-South Transit Corridor’, which allows the country to access Asian markets and which, according to British Intelligence, has acquired great value since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine because it allows arms trade in a “less vulnerable” way to international sanctions. And they also talked about the BRICS, the Eurasian Economic Union and the signing of free market agreements between the latter entity and Iran.

Both countries have strengthened ties in recent years, especially after the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine, in which Tehran helps Moscow with the Shahed drone supply, while Russia supports Iran in breaking its isolation with its entry into international and regional organizations such as the BRICS or the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

With the start of Russian gas supplies to Iran, Russia would acquire a new market after the implementation of Western sanctions due to the war in Ukraine that force it to look for alternatives to European customers.
