SESAC Latina celebrated its 30th anniversary with its annual SESAC Latina Music Awards, which took place on Wednesday (June 26) at the Beverly Hills Hotel in Los Angeles.

The ceremony, which included moving speeches and a special performance by the Tejano/Northern group Intocable, awarded brothers Julián and Manuel Turizo the songwriter of the year award in the pop/Latin rhythm category. Meanwhile, for the first time, Salvador Aponte received the composer of the year award for regional Mexican music.

Julián and Manuel were recognized for their hit song “El merengue,” which won pop/Latin rhythm song of the year. On the Latin Airplay list of Billboard, the song reached No. 1 last year. As for Aponte, he was honored for Mexican music songs that he wrote such as “La Patrona,” “Sebusobreros” and “150 Pedas,” all recognized with performance awards.

The SESAC Latina award for Regional Mexican Song of the Year went to “Frágil,” written by Yahritza Martínez and recorded by Yahritza y Su Esencia and Grupo Frontera. The song reached No. 2 in the chart Latin Airplay last summer.

Mexican singer-songwriter Luciano Luna was recognized with the Legacy Award. He was previously awarded the SESAC Latina Composer of the Year Award four times for his many hits performed by a variety of artists and groups, such as Banda El Recodo (“The Best of All”), Caliber 50 (“Tus Latidos”), Julión Álvarez (“You would have left sooner”), Grupo Firme (“The replacement”) and Banda Los Recoditos (“I had plenty of you”).
