In a historic milestone, Russian gas giant Gazprom and the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) on Wednesday signed a major strategic memorandum to boost the supply of natural gas via pipelines from Russia to the Islamic Republic of Iran.

This strategic agreement seeks to establish a mutually beneficial long-term collaboration between both parties, laying the foundations for a large-scale project in the natural gas sector.

The signing ceremony took place during the visit of a Gazprom delegation, led by the company’s president, Alexei Miller, to Iranian territory.

The event was attended by the interim Iranian president, Mohammad Mokhber, and within the framework of this important meeting, Alexei Miller also held a meeting with the Iranian Oil Minister, Javad Owji. During these meetings, the priority steps to carry out the signed strategic memorandum were discussed, as well as the various areas of cooperation in the energy sector between Russia and Iran.

The Islamic Republic of Iran, facing heavy Western sanctions, has expressed interest in developing its vast oil and gas resources. As part of this strategy, last year it announced the creation of a gas distribution center in the Asaluyeh industrial region, located in the southern province of Bushehr.

This agreement between Gazprom and Iran’s NIGC opens new doors for energy cooperation between both nations, strengthening ties and promoting the development of the natural gas industry in the region.
