Nguemo dies in car accident

Landry Nguemo, former midfielder for the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon, died after a car accident in his country.

Cameroon’s football federation, FECAFOOT, confirmed the death of the 38-year-old player.

“The Cameroon Football Federation has just learned the tragic news of the death of former Indomitable Lion Landry Nguemo in a traffic accident.

“Nguemo, who was a key player for the Cameroon national team from 2006 to 2014 and former member of Girondins de Bordeaux, will be remembered for his contributions to football.

“FECAFOOT extends its deepest condolences to his family, friends and the entire football community.”
His former club Celtic paid tribute to him on their website.

“Everyone at Celtic Football Club is shocked and saddened by the news of the passing of Landry N’Guemo at the young age of 38,” the club said in a statement.

“The thoughts and prayers of everyone at Celtic Football Club are with Landry’s family and friends at this sad time.”

Nguemo had spent a season on loan at Celtic during a career that began at French side Nancy and included spells in Turkish and Norwegian football.

He played over 40 times under Tony Mowbray and Neil Lennon for Celtic during the 2009–10 season, making his competitive debut in the Champions League qualifying match against Dynamo Moscow.

He won the French League Cup in Nancy in 2006 and was part of the Cameroon team that finished runners-up at the 2008 AFCON in Ghana.

Additionally, Nguemo participated with Cameroon in the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, where the Indomitable Lions fell in the group stage.
