The National Meteorological Service (SNM) in San Juan issued a flood warning for 12 municipalities in Puerto Rico on Thursday, valid until 4:30 p.m.

The meteorological agency predicts that the flood will affect low-lying and poorly drained areas in the municipalities of Adjuntas, Cabo Rojo, Guánica, Guayanilla, Hormigueros, Lajas, Maricao, Peñuelas, Ponce, Sabana Grande, San Germán and Yauco.

At 1:17 p.m., Doppler radar indicated heavy rain due to thunderstorms, while 1 to 2 inches of rain was recorded in the affected areas.

Meanwhile, an additional 1 to 2 inches of rain is expected to fall in the region, exacerbating flooding conditions.

Meteorology urges not to cross flooded areas

In these cases, the SNM urges not to cross flooded roads, given that the accumulation of water is generally greater than what can be seen with the naked eye.

Drivers should look for alternative routes. A single foot of water can sweep away a car.

Most flood deaths occur in cars, according to Meteorology.
