The Autonomous Sports Organization (OAD) of the La Laguna City Council celebrated its Lagunero Sports Gala 2024 this Wednesday, June 26, at the Leal Theater. An event whose primary objective is to honour athletes, initiatives, sports federations and public or private entities that maintain a notable commitment to the development and promotion of sport and its values ​​in the Laguna enclave.

Ten winners for the ten categories awarded with a representative trophy. For its part, the award for Sports Gesture was granted to Haris Volleyball Club as a reference for ‘fair play’ after what happened in the Spanish Men’s Cadet Championship held in Castellón. After the tragic death of a player from another club, the team made the decision to give up continuing in the competition. The award to the Quarry also fell on the Haris Volleyball Club for its great youth program in which training in values ​​and the integral development of people takes precedence. Both awards were collected by the president of the entity, David Martín.

He Best Women’s Team is he CLUCOTE Athletics Sports Club. It is the team most voted for by the public with more than a hundred votes. In turn, the Best Men’s Team was awarded to the Union La Paz Youth Association on the 75th anniversary of its foundation.

The Best Female Athlete It is Isabel Noda Sáez. The young woman from the Betancu-Laguna Swimming Sports Club maintains the best record in the Canary Islands in the 50-meter butterfly (29.01 seconds). In turn, the Best Male Athlete fell on Ruben Rodriguez Alvarezfor his great sports record as a Tactical Combat Athlete (TCA).

The award Indigenous, A recognition to the initiative or project that promotes and preserves local traditions related to sport, was given to the Palo Canario University Collective.

The choice of winners for each category has been decided through two instances: the public vote through the online platform available on the official website of the OAD Lagunero, whose results will form an important part of the selection process; and a jury appointed by the OAD composed of Badel Albelo, Sports Councilor of the La Laguna City Council; Michelle Alonso, Paralympic swimming champion; Eusebio Ledesma, Lucha Canaria mainstay; Suso Santana, former CD Tenerife player,: Selene Melián, sports journalist; and Pilar Herrero, technician from the Social Welfare Area.

The president of the Autonomous Sports Body, Badel Albelo, wanted to thank first of all “the work and dedication of all the clubs and athletes of the municipality, but also that of their families, for cultivating and promoting values ​​that help us form as people.” “Sport is essential, beyond the results, to grow as individuals in an increasingly plural and diverse society,” added Albelo, who highlighted “the participation of so many teams and athletes at an individual and collective level in La Laguna.” “This Gala demonstrated once again the commitment that Laguneros have with sport, the promotion of healthy habits and values ​​such as discipline, respect, camaraderie, or perseverance,” concluded the president of the OAD.
