Son of missing woman speaks out after avalanche in Venecia, Antioquia: “The house was flooded”

In Venice, Antioquia, relief agencies continue to search for two people who disappeared after an avalanche that destroyed everything in its path.

The families of Mrs. Margarita, 80, and Mr. Ovidio, 75, are still hoping to find their bodies.

“At that moment I was sleeping with her…I heard the rumble in the back. When we opened it, the house was flooded. I tried to open the door and I couldn’t because it got stuck. Afterwards I went back for her and the water threw me out”said Carlos Giraldo, Doña Margarita’s son.

Today the anguish is not only for him, but also for more than 100 families who lost their homes that they managed to build with so much effort. Sadness, with that word those affected describe it.

Since seven o’clock this Thursday morning, the Fire Department of Venice and nearby municipalities, accompanied by Civil Defense and search dogs, have been carrying out work in all the ravines and affected areas.

We began searching for two people who are still missing, two older adults, female and male.“We have very specialized search units,” said Juan Carlos Posada, operational coordinator of the Civil Defense of Antioquia.

“We have continued the search process since six in the morning, we will also carry out the evacuation and rescue of people from the villages where it has not yet been possible to evacuate,” noted Corporal Laura Galeano, deputy commander of the Venice firefighters. .

Donatón to help those affected by avalanche in Venice

From the Mayor’s Office of Venice they enabled some savings accounts for a donation in which they hope to collect funds and be able to help the people who are currently in shelters in the municipality.

The avalanche, which occurred on the night of Tuesday, June 25, 2024, left two people missing, more than 200 people affected, five houses completely destroyed, and streets filled with debris such as mud, sticks, and stones.
