A week has passed since the arrival of the coldest season of the year and in Parque Chacabuco a school is still without gas supply.

This is the traditional educational establishment, the “Manuel José de Labardén” Vocational Art Institute (IVA), with more than one hundred years of history, is in a complicated situation due to the lack of gas service at its headquarters located in Parque Chacabuco. This problem is aggravated in the midst of the cold wave that is hitting the city.

The school, which has three locations in total, serves approximately two thousand students daily. The Parque Chacabuco location, located on Curapaligüe street at 1026, has a kindergarten and art workshops for boys and girls of primary and secondary school age.

Two weeks ago, Metrogas cut off the gas supply to the institution after warning for a year about the need to carry out specific works to guarantee the safety of the facility. Given the lack of response from the Government of the City of Buenos Aires (GCBA) to carry out these works, the gas company decided to take this drastic measure.

The educational community, led by the VAT cooperator, held a “blanket” at the door of the institute to demand solutions to the situation. Pablo Goldring, vice president of the cooperative, expressed that the lack of stoves is worsened by the drop in temperatures, which according to the National Meteorological Service, will reach minimums close to zero degrees in the coming days.

Eugenia Corrés, president of the cooperative, pointed out that the authorities had been demanding the necessary interventions, but never received a response. In addition, she indicated that Metrogas cut the service as the only way to force the government to act, since the company considers that carrying out the work is the responsibility of the GCBA.

Following the protest, the educational community received a first commitment from the Buenos Aires government and hopes that the works can begin next week. However, the situation remains complicated for students and teachers, who must face the low temperatures without having heating in the classrooms.

The entry Winter has arrived and a school is still without gas was published first in Vecinos de Flores (y Parque Chacabuco).
