MIAMI GARDENS, Florida, USA —

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni will not be in charge against Peru on Saturday in the Copa America after being suspended for one match for his team’s delays in the second half of their previous two encounters.

The CONMEBOL disciplinary commission reported on Friday that Scaloni received a one-match suspension for breaking the regulations of the continental tournament.

Article 145 of the regulations states that “if players appear on the field of play later than the scheduled start or resumption time,” the team will receive a warning of suspension and then will be sanctioned if they repeat the offence.

In both the 2-0 win over Canada in the opening game and then in the 1-0 win over Chile last Tuesday, the Argentine team entered late for the restart. The Canadians complained publicly about the delay.

As a result of the sanction, Scaloni will not be able to be on the bench against Peru. He will also not be able to appear at the press conference prior to the duel against the Peruvians in the closing of Group A.

Argentina has already qualified for the quarterfinals of the tournament and needs to score a point to secure first place in the bracket.
