The second season of The House of the Dragon has already landed in Max. Clare Kilner, who, after directing several episodes of the series, has also directed 2×02, has confessed that the overwhelming sequence of the Jaehaerys Targaryen’s funeralwas inspired by none other than The Godfather and the funeral of Lady Di.

One of the most emotional sequences of this second chapter was the funeral of Aegon II’s son (Tom Glynn-Carney) with Haelaena (Phia Saban) after it was killed by Blood and Cheesewho acted under the orders of Daemon Targaryen who sought revenge after Lucerys, along with her dragon Arrax, was killed by the mammoth Vaghar on whose back the cruel Aemond Targaryen traveled.

After the infanticide, Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans) hatch a stratagem to try to take advantage of the pain and loss of the little boy to put together a story that supports his aspirations and makes both the plebs and the rest of the lords of Westeros who have not yet spoken out, vs. Rhaenyra Targaryen.

Thus, the still Hand of the King organizes a state funeral to say goodbye to Jahaerys, showing the corpse of the little boy (who was decapitated) and so blame Rhaenyra for turn the people against him seeing her as a monster.

A delicate scene with great symbolism that Claire Kilner, producer of the series and director of this second chapter, has analyzed. Thus during an interview on the Still Watching podcast, Kilner revealed what it was like to approach this sequence, which It was filmed in Spainand revealed that found inspiration in the funeral of Diana of Wales.

Apparently, Kilner, who directed the fourth, fifth and ninth episodes of The House of the Dragon in its first season, He approached the extras after seeing Some images from Princess Diana’s funeralwho died in the summer of 1997, to find out if they had experienced the death of any family members and give the scene greater realism.

“I grew up in Argentina, so I speak Spanish. “I spoke with them to investigate the personal experiences of grief they had had.”, he explained. In this way, remembering them individually, instead of just being a crowd doing something, would give the scene truthfulness.

Another of the great influences for this mournful sequence was Don Vito Corleone’s burial in The Godfather, Francis Ford Coppola’s classic released in 1972 and which is considered, by many, the best film in the history of cinema.

“I went through The Godfather and all those great movies that have these incredible funeral scenes,” The director revealed in an official video about how the second chapter of the series was filmed, in which she also once again mentions the funeral of Diana of Wales among these influences.
