The first forecasts point to an extremely active tropical cyclone season in the Atlantic and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has already agreed on its list of names for 2024.

The most intense tropical cyclones have been named since 1953 and to do so, six lists of 21 names are used that are repeated every six years.

Meanwhile, the deadliest and/or costliest hurricanes are removed from the list and replaced with new names.

Since 1972, 95 have retired, some of them very high profile like Katrina, Paloma or Wilma.

The most intense tropical cyclones are named to facilitate meteorological communication with the public and between different agencies, and short, easy-to-remember names are used to help fix meteorological information in memory.

Names are attributed only to hurricanes and tropical storms; both types of storms are differentiated by the strength of the sustained winds they produce.

The tropical storm has sustained winds greater than 62 kilometers per hour (km/h) and the hurricane produces sustained winds greater than 119 km/h.

Meanwhile, the Saffir-Simpson scale classifies tropical cyclones based on the maximum sustained winds they produce and is divided into five categories, the fifth being the most intense, when sustained winds exceeding 252 km/h and catastrophic damage occur. .

The tropical Atlantic hurricane season will begin June 1 through November 30, with peak activity typically occurring from mid-August to the first half of October.

Researchers from Colorado State University predict an especially active hurricane season in the Atlantic, with 23 named cyclones and up to 11 hurricanes, due in part to the El Niño effect, with sea water surface temperatures above normal values .

A warm ocean enhances the development of these cyclones, especially when the water temperature exceeds 25 or 26 degrees Celsius.
