Sánchez announces this Monday whether he will continue as president of Spain

The President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sanchezwill appear this Monday at the Moncloa Palace to announce whether or not he remains in office after having reflected on his continuity amid a wave of solidarity from socialist leaders and activists who ask him not to take a step back.

Both the Government and the PSOE ensure that all options are open and that it is a personal decision, far from any type of strategy, after the campaign of “harassment and demolition” that Sánchez considers he is suffering from. of the PP, Vox and right-wing and far-right media and organizations and which includes attacks on his wife, Begoña Gómez.

The Chief Executive announced on Wednesday that he was giving himself a few days of reflection to consider whether it was worth continuing and that it would be this Monday when he would announce his decision.

The unknown remains about the path he has chosen and even about the time at which he will appear at the headquarters of the Presidency of the Government to make it public.

The opening of proceedings by a Madrid court following the complaint filed against Begoña Gómez by Manos Liminas for the alleged commission of crimes of influence peddling and corruption in business was the trigger for her decision to open the door to resignation.

Nobody, no minister or any leader of the PSOE, even from its closest circle, dares to predict what will happen, and all those who have spoken publicly or have been consulted by EFE agree that nothing can be ruled out.

The feeling they convey is that Sánchez thought about resigning after learning of the complaint against his wife, but that, in order not to act in a hurry, he decided to give himself a few days of reflection as he explained in his letter to the citizens.

They admit that there is a lot of concern about the decision he may take since they assure that there is a certain risk that he will resign.

But they avoid making more speculations about the possible scenarios, which include the continuity of the president, the fact that it is linked to the success of a question of trust, an electoral call for which they would still have to wait a little more than a month, or by the resignation and subsequent attempted investiture of another socialist representative.

The PSOE transformed the meeting of its Federal Committee on Saturday scheduled to approve the candidacy for the European elections into an act of support for its leader in which calls were repeated not to throw in the towel.

“Peter, stay”was the message with which the number two of the Government and the PSOE, María Jesús Montero, opened her intervention in that socialist conclave and which was supported by the rest of the party leaders and, in the street, several thousand militants who had arrived in Madrid. from all over Spain to support their general secretary.

There have also been other mobilizations over the weekend asking Sánchez to continue leading the Government, and, among his partners, the vice president of the Executive and leader of Sumar, Yolanda Díaz, has supported him, stating that “no one is going to bend the Government” and? “democratic legality will be respected” facing a right and an extreme right to whom “They have time left to be in the opposition”.

For his part, the president of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, who also plans to appear this Monday after knowing the option that Sánchez opts for, has stated that, whatever he decides, he already represents the past after having brought “decay and division” to Spain.
