Belarus considers peace conference on Ukraine useless without Russian presence

The peace conference on Ukraine scheduled in Switzerland for June is meaningless without Russia’s participation, Belarusian Foreign Minister Sergei Aleinik said today.

I would like to point out the futility of the initiatives recently heard from Switzerland to convene a peace summit on Ukraine without the participation of Russia, which has no prospects, because it is simply not intended to reach a concrete agreement, the Belarusian foreign minister told the press.

The minister noted that Belarus has not been invited to take part in the conference, adding that any peaceful solution to this conflict and any discussion on European and Eurasian security without the participation of Russia and Belarus are absolutely useless.

Switzerland will hold a peace conference on Ukraine on June 15 and 16 in Burgenstock, near the city of Lucerne.

The spokesman for the Russian embassy in Bern, Vladimir Jojlov, maintained that the summit is another option to promote an “unviable” peace formula of the president of Ukraine, Vladimir Zelensky, “that does not take into account Russian interests.”

At the same time, Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis stressed that “no peace process can be carried out without Russia.”

His Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, warned that the possible presentation of a “collective ultimatum” to Russia at the conference in Switzerland on Ukraine nullifies any possibility of that event being successful.

In November 2022, Zelensky presented his peace formula, with 10 sections, including: radiological and nuclear security; food safety; energy security; as well as the release of prisoners and deportees.

It also refers to the implementation of the UN Charter; the withdrawal of Russian troops and the cessation of hostilities; justice; ecocide and environmental protection; escalation prevention; and confirmation of the end of the war.
