Peru: objects from an ancient civilization were discovered in Lima

archaeologists in Peru discovered ten ceramic vessels dating back approximately 600 years, belonging to the Chancay culture, originally located in the north of Lima, according to the Ministry of Culture.

He discovery It took place at the archaeological site of Lauri, in Chancay, Huaral region, which is part of the department of Lima. This area was an important center of development of the Chancay culture during the Late Intermediate period (1100 AD – 1450 AD).

The operation was carried out by experts from the Recovery Directorate, a unit of the General Directorate for the Defense of Cultural Heritage, in collaboration with personnel from the District Municipality of Chancay. According to the ministry, the pieces found include jugs, pots and plates, created using modeling techniques and the use of molds, and feature a black and white color palette.

The vessels were in a state of considerable deterioration and, in some cases, fragmented, affected by adverse environmental conditions or by inappropriate handling. After the discovery, the pieces were transferred to the headquarters of the Ministry of Culture to initiate appropriate protection actions. Subsequently, its evaluation will be planned for official registration and its possible declaration as heritage.

“The discovery is the result of a day of inspection of the aforementioned cultural property, which was also carried out at the Pampa Libre Archaeological Site, in response to the complaint made by a citizen through the virtual platform of the Ministry of Culture, regarding the occurrence of excavations in both places, with the purpose of illicitly extracting movable cultural property, an action that is commonly known as huaqueo,” the institution reported.

Likewise, the Ministry of Culture called on citizens to collaborate in the defense and protection of the nation’s cultural heritage. He urged citizens to report to the entity any discovery or act of vandalism against cultural heritage, whether movable or immovable.
