What is osteogenesis imperfecta?

The Imperfect osteogenesisalso known as Brittle Bone Diseaseis a rare pathology of genetic origin that is characterized by inadequate bone formation, frequent appearance of fractures and bone fragility.

This genetic disorder has no cure and affects bone growth, due to the mutation of a gene responsible for producing an essential protein called Collagen type I. This protein helps strengthen bones.

The incidence of this disease is estimated at one case per 10,000-15,000 births, regardless of race and gender.

Some of the most characteristic symptoms of this pathology uncommon are the following, which must be evaluated and corroborated by a specialist doctor:

  • Blue or gray white covering of the eyes (sclera).
  • Multiple bone fractures.
  • Triangle-shaped face.
  • Incipient and progressive hearing loss.
  • Bowed arms and legs.
  • Discoloration and fragility in the teeth (Dentinogenesis Imperfecta).
  • Short stature.
  • Weak muscles.
  • Lax joints.
  • Deviations in the curvature of the spine: Scoliosis and Kyphosis.
  • Bone deformities in the upper and lower extremities, thorax and skull.

How did this International Day originate?

The creation of this anniversary was at the initiative of the Australian Osteogenesis Societywithin the framework of the Australian Osteogenesis Imperfecta Conferenceheld on May 1, 2008.

Its main purpose is to disseminate information internationally about Osteogenesis Imperfecta, as well as achieve greater integration of people who suffer from it, through access to educational and employment opportunities.

The date of commemoration was set on May 6, symbolically called “Wishbone Day” either “Lucky Bone Day” and it began to be celebrated in 2010.

How is this anniversary celebrated?

A curious fact about the celebration of this International Day lies in the circulation of the official logo and mascot called “Wishy” around the world, at the request of the National Osteogenesis Imperfecta Associations. It is shaped like a skeleton and is made of wood.

Talks, sessions and conferences (in person and virtual) are held about Osteogenesis Imperfecta, with the participation of specialist doctors, researchers in the scientific and area, patients and the general public.
