Today there is a boom in virtual assistants like ChatGPT. With a couple of instructions, they can perform various tasks or obligations, which has sparked a growing debate regarding the risks of education in the face of the advance of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Along these lines, on May 30, the Autonomous University of Chile carried out the “International Educational Innovation Seminar 2024 AI Connectionin which national and international academics and researchers specialized in Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the educational context analyzed how the industry is adapting, in addition to its benefits and challenges.

Regarding the motivation of the instance, Hernán Viguera, academic vice-rector of the Autonomous University of Chileexplained that “universities have to be, like all actors, attentive to the possibilities.”

“AI, at the beginning, there were prominent voices that called for its use to be suspended because its effects were unsuspected, there were great fears, they did not know if data protection was guaranteed and, once those fears were overcome, we must have safeguards, because it is still a phenomenon in the process of knowledge It forces us to think about how professional skills are going to be altered in the future,” he specified.

The objective of the seminar was to explore the convergence between Generative Artificial Intelligence and Educationanalyzing its ability to enhance learning by creating tools, strategies and new practices.

Challenges of education facing AI

On the day, Claudia Jaña, education manager of the Kodea Foundation, highlighted that “just as we learn other disciplinary areas, such as mathematics, it is necessary to understand how artificial intelligence and technology work. If we do not provide this information to boys and girls, we will have users who know how to play or only know basic technology, such as searching the Internet, and we will not be able to develop skills.

Given the concern about the potential negative impact of AI in classroomsthe event sought to provide a space for the exchange of ideas and experiences, highlighting the transformative role that this technology can play in the educational field.

About it, Olga Alarcón, manager of Fundación Telefónica Movistar Chilepointed out that “our capacity or development of this opportunity has to do with how we are also incorporating this into our teaching life, which has ongoing training and how we are accessing it to always be up to date with the challenge that technology poses to us.” .

Faced with the impact of AI, several entities are taking measures to make it a complement in the field of education. For example, in May 2023, the Ministry of Education released a guide for teachers on using ChatGPT. In the same way, the seminar held by the Autonomous University brought together various people who are dedicated to the field to analyze your different opportunities.

Regarding the effects of Artificial Intelligence in education, Tatiena Klymchuk, professor of data science at the International University of Catalonia and co-founder of the artificial intelligence company Somia Solutions, indicated that “we have 500 days of ChatGPT and we do not know what will happen in 5 years with all these tools. Therefore, we have to be able to create these very volatile and very acceptable learners for new technologies like ChatGPT.

“The main impact is to be able to create future workers who can be trained quickly and modularly, with this knowledge that changes every day,” he explained.
