The INE confirms Sheinbaum’s victory with more than 35.9 million votes in the Mexican presidential elections

The National Electoral Institute (INE) of Mexico confirmed this Thursday the victory of the presidential candidate Claudia Sheinbaum, who has obtained more than 35.9 million votes, according to 100 percent of the votes counted, which gives her a greater difference compared to his main rival, Xóchitl Gálvez. The complete count indicates that Sheinbaum has obtained 59.75 percent of the votes, while Gálvez has obtained 27.45 percent, corresponding to a total of 16.5 million votes. In third place, Jorge Álvarez Máynez, has received 10.32 percent of the ballots (6.2 million votes). Sheinbaum, who has become the first woman elected to the Presidency of Mexico, has thus been the candidate with the most votes since the INE has records. Until the election of the outgoing president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, no candidate had managed to exceed 20 million votes. This, however, was done in 2018 with 30.1 million votes, far behind the current president-elect. However, in these elections, the participation rate has reached 61 percent, that is, 2.4 percentage points less than in previous presidential elections. SHEINBAUM THANKS THE VOTERS After the publication of the district counts, the president-elect of Mexico has taken the opportunity to thank the more than 35 million voters who have opted for her candidacy: “I am truly excited and again I want to thank you,” has expressed through a video published on his social media profile. “I am convinced (that) this result is the recognition of the people of Mexico that we are on the right path and the confidence that we will continue to advance with the Fourth Transformation. Our conviction has always been and will be the opening of dialogue, the strengthening of freedoms, democracy and, of course, the closeness with the Mexican people,” he said. Sheinbaum, López Obrador’s ‘dolphin’ and former mayor of the capital, has assured that they will continue to “build shared prosperity.” “I am not going to fail you. We are going through the second floor of the Fourth Transformation,” she insisted. The day before, she appeared willing to have the votes reviewed, ensuring that she was “sure” of her victory, after Gálvez asked the electoral authorities to open 80 percent of the packages. Previously, after acknowledging her failure, she announced that she would challenge the election results. More than 99.5 million Mexicans were called to the polls in the largest elections in their history, with more than 20,000 positions at stake, including the composition of the new Congress, made up of almost 630 seats between the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate. All of this in the midst of a campaign also marked by violence, in which around thirty candidates have been murdered.
