Paris, June 7.- The 38 electoral lists in contention in France for Sunday’s European elections today complete the last day of the campaign with only seven of them considered in the polls with options of obtaining MEPs.

At midnight this Friday the reservation period (electoral silence) will be activated and tomorrow the almost 50 million registered voters will have a day of reflection, only half of them interested in going to the polls, according to surveys.

The loot at stake on Sunday is made up of 81 MEPs, those assigned to France in the 2024-2029 legislature of the European Parliament, which will have 720 seats.

The elections are also considered by the main political forces as a thermometer of their roots in the population and a referendum to evaluate the management of the government and President Emmanuel Macron.

According to the polls, the nationalist party National Agrupation (RN), identified with the extreme right, is the large favorite, doubling the voting intentions of the governmental Renacimiento and its allies.

All the polls, including those from IFOP-Fiducial, Ipsos and Elabe, place RN and its head of the list Jordan Bardella with between 31 and 34 percent support, which if materialized would represent rising from around twenty current MEPs to around 30.

Support for the extreme right is a growing trend in several member countries of the European Union, a scenario that generates concern due to their “anti-European” positions and radical vision on security and immigration issues.

Opinion studies give the ruling party a threshold of 16 percent of voting intentions, while the Socialist Party/Plaza Pública tandem comes third with up to 14 percent.

Behind the vanguard trio are La Francia Insumisa (LFI), with eight to nine percent, the conservative party Los Republicanos (seven), the ecologists (six) and the far-right organization Reconquista (six).

To aspire to obtain any of the 81 MEPs assigned to France in the 2024-2029 legislature of the European Parliament, the parties must obtain at least five percent of the votes.

The polls are not accepted by all political leaders, among them President Macron, who said yesterday that he did not believe in the polls and did believe in the elections, while the top figure of LFI, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, stated that this left-wing force usually be underestimated in opinion studies.

Regarding the issues that concern voters ahead of Sunday’s European elections, the loss of purchasing power due to inflation, immigration, health and environmental protection stand out.

Also present in the list campaigns are the conflict in Ukraine and the situation in the Gaza Strip, a Palestinian territory devastated by Israel in retaliation for the Hamas attack on October 7.
