The Government of Venezuela seeks to accelerate its entry as a full member of the BRICS group of emerging economies, according to Caracas in a statement regarding the participation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yván Gil, in the meeting of foreign ministers of the bloc, held this Monday in the Russian city. from Nizhny Novgorod.

“At this meeting of the bloc – founded by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa – Venezuela attends with the purpose of accelerating its entry as a full member, considering its energy strengths and its strategic location on the American continent,” the letter says.

Lavrov and Gil also signed a memorandum this Tuesday to jointly counter Western sanctions.

In parallel to this activity, Gil held conversations with his counterparts from Cuba, South Africa and Belarus, Bruno Rodríguez, Naledi Pandor and Sergei Fyodorovich Aleinik, respectively, as well as with representatives of the Governments of India and the United Arab Emirates.

“We come with the instructions of President Nicolás Maduro, to bring Venezuela’s contributions to this organization (…) to share our experience,” said the chancellor in a video he shared through X.

Last August, the group agreed to the entry of Argentina, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Ethiopia, the United Arab Emirates and Iran.

Other countries have expressed their desire to join that club, including Bolivia, Cuba and Honduras.

Venezuela has reiterated its interest in joining the New Brics Development Bank, chaired by former Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff, close to the Maduro Executive.
