The head of the World Health Organization (WHO) on Wednesday welcomed a recent UN Security Council resolution calling for a complete and immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, and urged all parties to take the necessary measures for its immediate implementation.

During a press conference, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus urged all parties to act “immediately” to permanently end the suffering of millions of people.

He said that despite reports of increased food deliveries to Gaza, a significant portion of the population still faces catastrophic hunger and famine-like conditions, while there is currently no evidence to show that those who need it most they are receiving food aid in sufficient quantity and quality.

“Our inability to safely provide health services, combined with the lack of clean water and sanitation, significantly increases the risks of malnutrition in children, of which 72 deaths have already been attributed to malnutrition, including 28 among younger children. 5 years,” he stated.

Tedros also highlighted the worsening situation in the occupied West Bank, where he said attacks on healthcare and movement restrictions were obstructing access to health services.

“In most areas of the West Bank, clinics only operate two days a week and hospitals operate at approximately 70% of their capacity,” he said, stressing that the expansion of illegal Israeli settlements affects access to services. of health.

He noted that the WHO has documented 480 attacks on the health system in the West Bank since October 7, resulting in numerous injuries.

“In the West Bank, as in Gaza, the only solution is peace,” he said. “Once again, the best medicine is peace.”
