UN agency warns of health risks from 330,000 tons of solid waste in inhabited areas of Gaza

More than 330,000 tons of solid waste are piling up inside and outside inhabited areas of the Gaza Strip, a UN aid agency said Thursday.

Unimpeded humanitarian access and a ceasefire are ‘crucial to restoring living conditions,’ the United Nations Palestine Refugee Agency in the Middle East (UNRWA) said on social media site X.

Agency teams, through mental health services, continue to provide psychological interventions to children in shelter centers through specialized activities, such as psychological assistance, relaxation, stimulation sessions and purposeful games, he added.

Since October 7, 2023, Israel has been waging a full-scale war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip, resulting in the deaths of more than 37,000 Palestinians and the massive destruction of homes and infrastructure.

The Israeli offensive was in retaliation for Hamas’ unprecedented attack on southern Israel, in which more than 1,200 Israelis were killed and more than 250 taken hostage, according to Israeli authorities.
