The text assured that none of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda are on track to be met by 2030 but, on the contrary, most of the objectives show limited progress or a reversal.

Among other aspects, the analysis considers causes such as low financing, increased geopolitical tensions as well as the recent impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

At the same time, the report evaluated the willingness of countries to cooperate globally through UN institutions, a list where the United States occupied the last place.

“A large majority of countries support collaboration but there are a number of great powers that do not follow the rules of the game,” said Guillaume Lafortune, vice president of the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network.

According to the lead author of the report, the document confirms that even before the pandemic hit, progress was already too slow.

“Once the pandemic and other crises arrive, including military conflicts, it is a story of stagnation,” he insisted.

Among other aspects of little progress, the text considered the fight against hunger, the creation of sustainable cities and the protection of biodiversity on land and water as particular goals of weakness.

Meanwhile, other SDGs such as press freedom also experienced a reversal of progress.

In response, the report called for more support for developing countries that needed greater access to international finance to encourage institutions such as credit agencies to take into account a country’s long-term environmental and economic well-being, rather than just its short-term liquidity.
