Nicolás Maduro denounced this Sunday that “some leaders” – without specifying which ones – are conspiring against the canonization of José Gregorio Hernández, known in Venezuela as ‘the doctor of the poor’, to whom numerous miracles are attributed in South America.
“Some leaders have conspired so that he is not given the title, we all know which leaders have conspired so that José Gregorio does not have his title of saint in the Vatican for a long time,” Maduro said at an event held in Caracas, broadcast by the state channel VTV.
However, he continued, “fortunately” Pope Francis “loves José Gregorio and supports the people of Venezuela.”
“I know, I know, I know much more than I can say, but, out of Vatican prudence, I must remain silent,” added the Chavista spokesperson.
On June 3, Maduro said that Pope Francis approved the canonization of Hernández, “unofficial” information that asked Venezuelans to wait for the Vatican to “make it official,” but he claimed to have a video that confirms this news, although He did not then give details about it.
Recently, “in the face of unfounded rumors” that circulated on social networks, the Archdiocese of Caracas issued a statement to deny “all information stating that the canonization is already announced” of the doctor, who lived between 1864 and 1919, when he was killed by a car. of the first vehicles that circulated through Caracas.
The Venezuelan Church, which promotes the canonization of the blessed, has insisted that it will communicate the news of the sanctification when they have this information confirmed by the Vatican.
Hernández was beatified in April 2021, in a ceremony held in Caracas, after which confirmation of a second miracle attributed to him is awaited to proceed with his canonization.
