Madrid, June 2 (EFECOM).- The number of women who receive the maximum pension has multiplied by six in the last decade, going from 23,026 to 147,550, although they continue to be a minority compared to the men who receive it.

According to Social Security data compiled by EFE, in April of this year 147,550 women received the maximum or higher pension, which represents 30% of the total of 494,730 pensioners who received it.

In 2024, the maximum pension amounts to 3,175 euros per month or 44,450 per year.

Looking at the same month in 2014, when the maximum pension was 2,554.5 euros per month, 203,727 pensioners were in this highest pension bracket, of which 23,026, 10%, were women.

In total, the number of pensioners with a maximum pension has doubled in a decade although they represent 5% of the total of 9.2 million pensioners who receive each month.

Among women, those who receive the maximum pension represent 3.3% when a decade ago they were 0.6%.

However, the bulk of pensioners, 2.8 million, are in the lowest brackets and the gender gap in pensions almost reaches 500 euros.

To address this gap, measures have been adopted such as the gender gap supplement, in force since February 2021, which consists of a fixed amount of 33.20 euros per month per child, up to the fourth descendant.

This aid, intended to address the impact of birth or adoption on a worker’s professional career, complements 752,061 pensions, of which 675,565, almost 90%, are received by women, and the average monthly amount amounts to 71 euros.

According to the salary decile published by the National Statistics Institute (INE), in 2022 there were almost 1.5 million women in the last two deciles (with the highest salaries), a figure that still represents 43% of all workers. with that salary scale.

Ten years earlier, in 2012, the number of women among the highest-paid workers barely exceeded one million people, representing 35% of the total of those who earned the most.

The progressive incorporation of women into the labor market, who already exceed 10 million members, representing almost half of the total number of workers, and greater training contribute to this evolution, as well as the measures taken in recent years.

“More and more women are retiring and arriving with more years of contributions,” says the Secretary of Social Protection and Public Policies of CCOO, Carlos Bravo.

Bravo recalls that the treatment of contribution gaps linked to the care of children or other dependent family members has been improved and that having more years of contributions is reflected in higher pensions.

Along with this, the head of CCOO explains that sectors such as medicine or finance where contributions are usually made at the maximum base are quite feminized and more women who belong to them are already retiring. EFECOM
