Madrid, June 17 (EFECOM).- Residents in municipalities with more than 30,000 inhabitants travel an average of 4.8 kilometers to do their shopping, a distance that grows to 8.4 kilometers in towns with between 10,000 and 30,000 inhabitants and up to 13.7 kilometers in towns with less than 10,000 inhabitants.

According to a survey on consumer habits released by Amazon, electronic commerce allows residents of the smallest municipalities to save three times as many kilometers when traveling to make purchases, compared to the average distance that those who live in towns have to travel. more than 30,000 inhabitants.

Likewise, more than half of consumers in rural areas, 56%, value that making purchases online allows them to avoid traveling, compared to 47% of urban consumers.

Two out of every ten respondents (20.3%) say that buying online saves them between one and two hours per month on average, a saving that is greater for people who live in municipalities with less than 10,000 inhabitants who, On average, they exceed two hours a month.

Likewise, and taking into account the savings in transportation and travel, the study reflects that electronic commerce allowed respondents to save an average of 20.6 euros per month per person, a figure that increases to 22 euros in smaller municipalities. .

Nine out of ten respondents bought a product online in the last year and close to a third, 31.5%, usually do so between 2 and 3 times a month, with an average monthly expense of 105.98 euros.

Those who spend the most money are those who live in municipalities with more than 30,000 inhabitants, who spend more than 109 euros, followed by those who live in towns with less than 10,000 inhabitants, with 104.46 euros, and those from municipalities with between 10,000 and 30,000, who spend 99.94 euros.

E-commerce, Amazon explains, is also “a key factor in boosting the economy and small businesses in rural areas,” through initiatives such as Amazon Hub Delivery, a network made up of local businesses that collaborate in the delivery of orders, guaranteeing “faster and more sustainable” delivery, while providing new avenues of income for these businesses.

In addition, nearly 5,000 small and medium-sized companies located in towns with less than 30,000 inhabitants currently sell their products through the Amazon store, and of them, 48% are located in municipalities with less than 10,000 residents, says the report.

Of those 5,000 SMEs, more than 60% export their products to the European Union, allowing them to “reach millions of customers, grow their business and promote the economic development of their communities.”

Together, these SMEs reached more than €300 million in international sales in 2022, according to this report. EFECOM
