MSD Animal Health presents Bovilis Cryptium during the XXVI International ANEMBE Congress of Bovine Medicine

It is the first EU-licensed vaccine that protects calves from birth against Cryptosporidium parvum. Cryptosporidiosis is one of the most significant gastrointestinal diseases in cattle.

MSD Animal Health, a division of Merck & Co., Inc., Rahway, NJ, USA (NYSE: MRK), has presented at the XXVI ANEMBE International Congress of Bovine Medicine 2024 Bovilis Cryptium, the first vaccine registered in the Union European Union to protect cattle against infection by Cryptosporidium parvum (C. parvum).

Bovilis Cryptium is indicated for the active immunization of pregnant cows to raise colostrum antibodies against Gp40 of C. parvum. Bovilis Cryptium is the first maternal vaccine for C. parvum in cattle. C. parvum is a highly infectious zoonotic parasite that causes cryptosporidiosis, a major cause of diarrhea in younger animals in livestock.

“MSD Animal Health is proud to offer Bovilis Cryptium, a new science-based way to combat the devastating parasite C. parvumwhich affects Europe and the rest of the world,” says Ángel Revilla, director of the Ruminants and Technology Unit at MSD Animal Health Spain. “This new vaccine offers preventive neonatal protection, which can help preserve the well-being of livestock from the first days of life, as well as contributing to global food production and security,” he adds.

Vaccination of the mother during the last third of gestation can provide protection to calves from birth through colostrum, protecting them just when they are most vulnerable. The parasite plays an important role in the development of calf diarrhea, the most common cause of death in suckling calves, and can have long-term effects on weight gain and production efficiency in severe cases.1.

Detailed conditions for the use of Bovilis Cryptium in cattle are described in the Summary of Product Characteristics, available at this link.
