With the aim of giving visibility to the work carried out by new generations of researchers in the biomedical field, the CIBER (Networked Biomedical Research Center) of the Carlos III Health Institute (ISCIII) will hold the first ‘Young Scientific Personnel Conference’ in Vigo between May 8 and 10, which will bring together nearly 350 members from its 13 thematic research areas. This forum, which will take place at the Afundación headquarters, is part of the events celebrating the 10th Anniversary of the CIBER Consortium.

For three days, the future of Spanish biomedical research will have its center of debate in the olive city, within the framework of a series of conferences in which the large collaborative research projects led by CIBER and the most cutting-edge lines of study that They allow us to advance on the path towards personalized and precision medicine. Likewise, the focus will be on cross-cutting topics such as the incorporation of patients in research or the application of Artificial Intelligence in biomedical research. The meeting also deals withand promote intergenerational exchange between young staff and established researchers, leaders in different thematic areas of CIBER, including inspiring sessions on professional careers, or keys to increasing the impact of science on society through scientific dissemination, among other matters.

The CIBER Consortium, key structure in the Science and Innovation system

The Conference will begin on Wednesday, May 8, with the opening speech by Federico Martinón Torres, group leader of the Respiratory Diseases area of the CIBER (CIBERES) at the University Hospital Complex of Santiago.

The program for this first day, conducted in all its sessions by young scientific personnel, will try to provide better knowledge of CIBER, a center of key importance for the Spanish Science and Innovation system and the largest biomedical research center in Spain, which It brings together 508 research groups in 104 consortium institutions and organized in 13 research areas, with a staff of more than 800 hired people and more than 5,000 assigned researchers. To do this, the manager of the Consortium, Margarita Blázquez, and the scientific deputy director of the Epidemiology and Public Health area of the CIBER (CIBERESP), Jordi Alonso, will intervene.

The importance of collaborative research projects facilitated by this network research structure will also be the subject of a debate session that will analyze different experiences of projects that have arisen thanks to the synergies fostered by CIBER.

Welcome with the mayor of Vigo and the director of the ISCIII

The main day of the meeting will be held on Thursday, May 9. The welcome will be given by the mayor of Vigo, Abel Caballero, and the director of the Carlos III Health Institute (ISCIII), Marina Pollán, accompanied by Marta Solans, representing the young scientific staff of the Consortium.

Also during the morning, consolidated researchers who are leaders in different thematic areas of the CIBER, such as Raquel Yotti, commissioner of the Perte in Health and researcher in the area of Cardiovascular Diseases of the CIBER (CIBERCV), Jordi Bruix, former scientific director of the area of Liver and Digestive Diseases (CIBEREHD), and Rosa Faner, researcher at the University of Barcelona and ERC Consolidator Grant, will share with the new scientists different experiences obtained throughout their career.

The main sessions of the program are completed by a round table on the importance of the patient in research projects, and a presentation that will revolve around the main challenges when researching in health, in which the director of the ISCIII, Marina Pollán, intervenes. , and the deputy scientific director of the Bioengineering, Biomaterials and Nanomedicine area (CIBER-BBN), Pilar Marco.

On Friday, May 10, the debate will revolve around the incorporation of AI in biomedical research projects and different professional alternatives will be discussed after completing the doctorate that young scientific personnel can opt for. The closing will be carried out by Jesús Oteo, scientific director of the Infectious Diseases area of the CIBER, and Elisabeth Prats, researcher and disseminator in the CIBER area of Bioengineering, Biomaterials and Nanomedicine (CIBER-BBN).
