50 years of training in rural medicine

Dr. Héctor María Rodriguez Bay, DNI 13,359,505. General Physician with Rural Orientation 8va. promotion of general practitioners (1981-1983) in the province of Neuquén.

May 2 was a very special day of commemoration in the history of the Neuquén system. 50 years ago, on May 2, 1974, the rural-oriented General Medicine Residency began its journey.

A group of young doctors began the path of their training and then went to work in low and medium complexity hospitals, with the aim of reducing the high infant mortality rate of the time, reducing home births, increasing vaccination coverage, and assisting to the prevalent pathology, increasing accessibility to care, improving its quality.

Obviously it wasn’t enough.

The nurses, health agents, drivers, administrators, cooks, maids, and all other technical assistants also added their human and professional contribution.

But this ongoing training of general practitioners over 50 years forged, forged and we hope will continue to forge many of the strengths of our system.

Many of the members of the different groups of Residents were later also drivers of Neuquén health management, giving them the imprint and mystique that contributed to their success and continuity.

Today, the Residency that began at the Castro Rendón Hospital has other locations that led to its enrichment and improvement in the training of the doctors who accessed its teachings.

It is also worth recognizing in these lines the Society of Rural Medicine of Neuquén SMR of Neuquén, which was a pillar and magnificent structure of technical and intellectual support for the training of general practitioners who graduated and left for the interior of Neuquén.
