A surgeon in Rome operated on a patient in Beijing, China, more than 8000 kilometers away. This remote surgery was possible thanks to 5G technology and fiber optic connections, which allowed precise coordination between the two countries.

The doctor Zhang Xu, head of Urology at the People’s Liberation Army General Hospital in China, operated from Rome using a surgical console that showed the patient in real time. Zhang directed robotic arms who repeated their movements to eliminate cancerous tissue from the prostate.

Throughout the operation, a medical team and another surgeon were at the patient’s side in China, ready to intervene if any problems arose. The operation was broadcast live at a medical conference in Romecalled “Challenges in Laparoscopy and Robotics and AI”.

Telesurgery, which had a latency of only 135 milliseconds, it was a success. “The biggest problem with remote surgery is communication and any possible delaysZhang Xu explained. “During today’s surgery, there was almost no delay, and it was almost like an in-person surgery”.

After this success, Zhang Xu’s team plans to continue using this technology for remote operations, especially to treat military personnel, which could change the way surgeries are performed in the future.
