A man was arrested after behaving violently and fighting with San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan’s security detail while he was being interviewed Tuesday night, according to police.

The incident occurred around 6:03 pm, when the suspect approached and shouted bad words at Mahan.

Police said the man displayed “erratic behavior” toward the mayor and his staff.

During the encounter, a police officer, dressed in plain clothes, repeatedly tried to calm the situation, however, the individual advanced towards him and hit him.

After a struggle, the officer, with the help of several bystanders, detained the man.

Authorities indicated that the officer was evaluated at a hospital for minor injuries. An investigation into the incident is now underway.

Mahan’s communications director, Tasha Dean, later issued the following statement:

“Mayor Matt Mahan is deeply grateful to his security team and the entire San Jose Police Department. The officer’s actions tonight were heroic and a testament to the de-escalation training that makes our officers effective, compassionate, and stewards of the community’s trust. His thoughts are with the officer and he hopes for a speedy recovery. The mayor understands how privileged it is to have an armed officer protecting him at all times and is resolute in his commitment to creating a safer city for everyone. “That means hiring more police officers and addressing the root causes of crime, including intervening earlier and more effectively in cycles of addiction, mental illness and violence.”
