The central avenue of San José or Rogelio Fernández Güell avenue would have 600 more meters of boulevard by the end of this year. This Thursday, the Municipality of San José gave the order to begin the works to expand and complete the road, which will extend to the La California neighborhood.

The works include the construction of a mixed-use boulevard (pedestrian-vehicular) between streets 9 and 13 (Chelles bar-Jade Museum), and a pedestrian boulevard between streets 13 and 21, between the new Legislative Assembly building and La Flota bar.

The works were commissioned to the Pedregal company and have a cost of ¢865 million. The execution period is 7 months.

Johnny Araya, mayor of San José, recalled during the work start activity that the pedestrianization of avenues in the capital began 30 years ago and currently there are more than 6 km of roads in that condition.

The pedestrian route of the central avenue begins on 14th Street, near the north corner of the San Juan de Dios Hospital, and ends on 9th Street, in front of the Chelles bar.

In addition to that boulevard that dates back more than three decades, in 2008 the Municipality also converted the route of Avenue 4, between Merced Park and Soledad Church, into an exclusive route for pedestrians.
