The Council of Ministers of Cuba declared the Sierra de la Gran Piedra in Santiago de Cuba as the country’s second geopark due to its ecological importance, state media reported this Saturday.

The territory covers about 324 square kilometers and includes the Heights of Santa María de Loreto and part of the Coastal Terraces of Mar Verde-Baconao, the agency detailed. Latin Press (PL).

“In these areas, agroforestry activities, soil and water management are carried out, which have their respective management programs, according to the national policies approved for such purposes,” indicated the source.

The Great Stone is an immense rock of volcanic origin 51 meters long, 25 meters high and 30 meters wide. The estimated weight exceeds 63,000 tons.

To manage the activities within the new geopark, the Eastern Center for Ecosystems and Biodiversity was created, which will also help with the conservation and responsible management of said landscape, according to PL.

The first geopark declared in Cuba in 2021 is located in Viñales, in the extreme west of the country, and in line with its high geological value.
