LAS VEGAS – The second-seeded and No. 62-ranked San Diego State women’s tennis resumed Friday’s suspended match against Colorado State on Saturday morning. The Aztecs led 3-2 and Zoe Olmos was on the brink of victory when the match was suspended. Olmos needed just two games to finish off his opponent on Saturday morning and advance to the title match.
The Scarlet and Black improve to 15-6 and end the Ram season at 11-12.
In doubles, on court No. 1, the All-Mountain West team of Yasmine Kabbaj and Myah Petchey (8-8) played against Radka Buzkova and Viktoryia Zhadzinskaya. The Aztecs were bested 6-1. The Aztecs’ other All-Mountain West tandem, Andreea Velcea and Andjela Skrobonja (13-3), paired up on the second court. Facing Zara Lennon and Sarah Weekley, the Aztecs won by the same score. Gloria Alogo played on the third court with Zoe Olmos (4-10). Facing Luana Avelar and Logan Voeks, the Aztec pair kept the match close but came up short 7-5 as the Rams earned the doubles point.
The Mountain West Player of the Year, No. 97-ranked Kabbaj (14-2) battled Lennon on the top court. The Aztec coasted to a win in straight sets 6-2, 6-1.
Velcea (13-4) faced Sarka Richterova on court no. 5. Velcea blanked her opponent 6-0 in the first set and finished her off 6-3 in the second.
Alogo (8-4) faced off against Weekley on court no. 4. She also won in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 to give the Aztecs a 3-1 lead and put them one win from the Championship match.
An All-Mountain West singles selection, No. 98-ranked Skrobonja (16-3) matched up with Buzkova on the second court. Skrobonja was tripped up 6-4, 6-4.
The match was suspended after Skrobonja’s match finished up and resumed on Saturday morning.
Olmos (9-8) went up against Zhadzinskaya on the bottom court. She earned a 6-3 win in the first set but fell by the same score in the second. Heading into Saturday morning with a 5-3 lead in the third, the Aztec dropped the first game but won the second for a 6-4 win to send the Aztecs to the title match.
Petchey’s (8-6) match went unfinished. On the third court, she faced Avelar. Petchey took the first set 6-3 but was bested 6-2 in the second to force a deciding third set. She trailed 4-3 when Olmos clinched an Aztec victory.
San Diego State moves on to the Championship match against UNLV at 11:15. The Rebels ended the Aztecs’ bid for a regular season championship last week in a 4-3 result.
