On a work day in Alpujarra, the general director of the Regional Autonomous Corporation of Tolima, Cortolima, Olga Lucía Alfonso Iannini, visited beneficiaries of home gardens, a food security project that improves the family economy and the construction of social fabric .

“We like to be in the territory and recognize the needs of the population and come up with solutions such as home gardens that not only generate the production of organic food but also the possibility of family integration, community exchange and knowledge,” said Alfonso Iannini in his route.

The official indicated that, together with Mayor David Tovar, they will explore the possibility of organizing a day of peasant markets with the beneficiaries in order for them to obtain additional income through an event that brings together the residents of Alpujarra and, at the same time , serve as a community meeting space.

Through this home garden project, families from Alpujarra and other municipalities in Tolima obtain inputs and workshops related to technology transfer on issues of agroecology, climate change and food security.

“Given the complex economic dynamics that Colombia and the world are experiencing, home gardens become an option for families to produce their own food, exchange with their neighbors and not have to go to marketing and purchasing channels,” explained Dainober. Esteban Trujillo, deputy director of Sustainable Environmental Development.

As a closing event for Children’s Month, the director of Cortolima, accompanied by Mayor David Tovar, read an environmental story to boys and girls from the Felisa Suárez de Ortiz Technical Educational Institution to promote the conservation and responsible use of natural resources in the new generations of Tolimenses.
