The German Embassy in Cuba criticized the repression of journalists on the island in the wake of World Press Freedom Day.

“Today is Press Freedom Day. There is not much to see here,” the diplomatic headquarters said in a post on Facebook.

Likewise, he posts the image of an official Cuban publication about an event on the steps of the University of Havana in support of Palestine, where a newspaper of the regime replicates the government discourse without further interpretation, analysis or criticism.

Activists and independent reporters have thanked the publication and Germany’s support for the exercise of the free press in Cuba.

“Excellent message! Thank you for supporting the free press!!!”, wrote journalist Mario J Pentón, based in Miami.

The activist Alfredo Álvarez responded by commenting “THANK YOU German Embassy in Cuba, you can’t imagine how much this gesture is appreciated with a people that suffers a murderous dictatorship. “Thank you for taking the right side of history.”

“In Cuba there is NO freedom of the press, you only have to look at the harassment that those who practice independent journalism on the Island suffer and have suffered, the only ones capable of showing the harsh reality of the country. They have suffered imprisonment, they have intervened in their houses, they have left and they have been denied entry to the country, what is happening in Cuba is a disaster. Hopefully at some point we can be free to say what we think without. fear or threats“commented another activist.

This year Cuba repeated as the worst Latin American country in press freedom, according to the list prepared for 2024 by the organization Reporters Without Borders.

This week, Cuban José Luis Tan Estrada was detained for four days in Villa Marista for doing independent journalism on the Island.
