The Puracé volcano, a majestic figure in the central mountain range of Cauca, has attracted attention by changing its alert status to Orange, according to the parameters monitored by the Colombian Geological Service -SGC.
The Colombian Geological Service has identified significant changes in three key variables: seismicity, ground deformation and composition of the volcano’s emissions.
These indicators point to an increase in the probability of an eruption, although they do not necessarily mean that it is imminent.

The increase in seismic activity, associated with rock fractures and fluid movements inside the volcano, has been notable. Furthermore, data telemetry systems reveal a gradual deformation of the volcanic edifice, along with the detection of a small magmatic body migrating towards the surface.
The director of the SGC’s Geohazards technical area, John Makario Londoño, has emphasized the importance of preparation and taking preventive measures in the face of the uncertainty of an eruption.
It has been urged to avoid proximity to the crater, since the sudden emissions of gases and ash represent a considerable danger to the population.
Since 2021, the Puracé volcano has shown gradual changes in its activity, with a notable increase in seismicity in March 2022, followed by a small phreatic eruption at the Curiquinga volcano, which is part of the Los Coconucos Volcanic Chain.

The municipalities of Puracé, Popayán and Soratá, as well as the indigenous and peasant communities in their area of influence, are on alert due to the potential risk of a considerable eruption.
Local and national authorities are urged to make informed decisions based on the information provided by the SGC, with the aim of protecting the lives and well-being of people at risk.
