A Cuban was sentenced to 30 years in prison for murdering a person in a case linked to an attempt to illegally leave the island for the United States by sea, according to state media.

The news was announced in the National Television News, where it was also indicated that the Provincial Court of Havana sanctioned four other people involved with sentences of between 10 and 13 years of deprivation of liberty for the crime of human trafficking, while Two other subjects accused of the crime of receiving were sentenced to lesser sentences.

The investigation into the death of a man in the municipality of Boyeros began the case in question. According to what was learned, the subject was murdered with knives when he refused to get into a vehicle that would transport four people to the place where they would take the boat to leave the island.

The report indicates that all those involved were arrested and confessed their participation in the incident, including one who had fled by sea and was captured by a US Coast Guard and handed over to the Cuban authorities.

The current economic and social situation that Cuba is experiencing has uncovered a series of violent crimes that have become known mainly through non-state media. For their part, the island’s Ministry of the Interior and the Prosecutor’s Office have ruled out the increase in crimes in recent years.

“There are no more murders in Cuba,” said Beatriz de la Peña, head of the Investigation Department of the Directorate of Criminal Proceedings of the Prosecutor’s Office, last March, according to a report in the state newspaper Granma. Of course, the board recognized that there is “greater visibility” of the murders in Cuba.

De la Peña stated that “with the use of social networks, many events have greater visibility; Therefore, a fact that was previously only known in the community where it occurred is now known by many more people.”

According to the source, “the motives for the murders are, in 89%, interpersonal problems of various types, and in 11%, profit motive.”
