La Rioja begins to study the impact of screens and technology on childhood and adolescence

The Study Commission to address the use of technologies among minors and adolescents held its constituent session this morning in the Parliament of La Rioja. From now on, this Commission will begin to work on a meeting schedule and the participation of experts.

The spokesperson for the Socialist Parliamentary Group, Javier García, has stated that with this Commission “we seek to generate a calm and open debate, with entities and experts, as well as all the actors involved, in order to carry out a diagnosis of the use and impact of technology on childhood and adolescence.”

García has pointed out that “there are figures that indicate that the average age for first contact with pornography is between 9 and 11 years.” Furthermore, the Socialist spokesperson has asserted that “there are more issues, such as bullying, cyberbullying, intensive use of non-recommended video games or online betting.” All this, García added, “demonstrates that we are facing an issue that requires an in-depth debate.”

The conclusions and recommendations of this Study Commission “will constitute a magnificent opportunity to update data on bullying and cyberbullying, unwanted loneliness, as well as the causes of the increase in sexual crimes among minors in our territory.”

Also, Javier García added, “they will be very useful for the effective drafting of policies in all areas; educational, childhood and family, or cybersecurity, as well as for the necessary reform of the Law on the Protection of Minors of La Rioja.”
