The story of General Alvear It begins in 1878, when the first group of settlers known as Volga Germans or German Russians arrive. Originally, they settled in what is now known as the General Alvear Colony, forming villages such as Valle María, Spatzenkutter, Salto, Protestante, San Francisco and Aldea Brasilera.
The colony was officially created on January 20, 1878 by the National Executive Branch and named in honor of General Alvear, a prominent Argentine military and politician who was Minister of War and Navy during the Rivadavia presidency.
