The Cuban Forest Ranger Corps (CGB) today declared one of the large forest fires reported in San Juan y Martínez, a municipality belonging to the western province of Pinar del Río, extinguished.

It covered around 156 hectares in the area known as Agua dulce, where young Caribbean pine predominates, said Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Pereda, head of the CGB in the western territory.

Forces from that body, agricultural workers and peasants are now directing their greatest efforts to combat another fire, also of large proportions, in Maquina Vieja, a few kilometers from Agua Dulce and close to the town of Nuevo Galafre.

Here there are also an estimated 385 to 389 hectares of young pine, acacia and eucalyptus, the manager indicated.

Heavy equipment is used in maneuvers to contain the flames, fanned by the winds and the combustible material accumulated in the area.

Drought and high temperatures characterize the area where the men continue the fight.

Considered the second most reforested province in Cuba, Pinar del Río reports so far this year the loss of more than 800 hectares as a result of forest fires that have the human factor as the main culprit.
