A report from Ciper uncovered efforts by former judge Juan Antonio Poblete to have his friend María Teresa Letelier join as a minister of the Supreme Court, in which the name of the candidate for the municipality of Santiago, Mario Desbordes (RN), appears involved.
According to the aforementioned media, in April 2023, the PDI raided Poblete’s home. Later, in July, following an order from the North Central Prosecutor’s Office – regarding the investigation led by prosecutor Jaime Retamal – experts from the PDI examined the confiscated technological elements, among which were cell phones, pen drives and hard drives, among others. .
In this context, one of the cell phones of Poblete – who was the Supreme Minister who authorized the Army’s espionage of journalists Mauricio Weibel – the experts found a series of chats via WhatsApp that he had with the former deputy and former Minister of Defense, Mario Overflows, which would have occurred in order to favor María Teresa Letelier so that she would reach the Supreme Court in 2021.
The first of the conversations took place on March 14, 2021, when Poblete asked Desbordes if he had any commitment to the quinas, to which the RN militant responded no. After this response, Poblete told her that her “best friend” María Teresa Letelier would be in the mix, “who has appeared for prosecutor Jud Suprema, which led to a tremendous earthquake in a group of more than 20 years. She is center-right, willing to work and help. She is loved by everyone, in addition to being a very accepted and wonderful woman.” Desbordes’ response was: “Let’s support her then.”
A month later, Poblete spoke to the former deputy again, telling him that “it would be a nice way to crown his (Letelier’s) career and, in addition, he would have a very reliable person during that period.”
Finally, on May 26, María Teresa Letelier became the new minister of the Supreme Court after a unanimous vote in the Senate, filling the vacant seat after the death in January of Judge Carlos Aránguiz due to pulmonary fibrosis.
Desbordes told the aforementioned media that he does not remember having taken any steps regarding the appointment of María Teresa Letelier. He also said that he met the former judge between 2018 and 2019, when he spoke in the Chamber of Deputies about the telephone interception processes. “The closeness consisted of conversations on WhatsApp,” he said.
