The UR falls one place in the ranking of the best universities in the country

The University of La Rioja (UR) remains in the lower middle zone among the campuses that have a better index in the U-Ranking 2024, a study prepared each year by the BBVA Foundation in collaboration with the Valencian Institute for Economic Research ( IVIE). The report compares 70 Spanish universities, both public and private, based on their performance in teaching and research and innovation, which cover 96% of the university system in terms of number of undergraduate students.

The Rioja public campus continues to appear, as it did last year, in low-intermediate positions in the classification, falling from position 5 to 6, which it shares with eleven other universities, and is situated above academic institutions such as Valladolid, Oviedo, Malaga and the Comillas Pontifical University. In the breakdown of the classification, the UR would occupy 41st place out of the 70 analyzed, one below that achieved in 2023, and 16 below that in 2022.

In the global ranking, the other Rioja campus, in this case private, the International University of La Rioja (UNIR) repeats in ninth place, one below the UNED and the same one in which centers such as the Cardenal Herrera University appear ( CEU). And, according to the same breakdown, it is placed in 62nd place, compared to 64th last year.

Along with the global results, the report analyzes two other aspects, on the one hand teaching and on the other research. In the first of them, the position of UNIR stands out, which, although it falls from first to second position, continues in the top positions, rubbing shoulders with Pompeu Fabra or the European University of Valencia. The Polytechnic of Valencia, the Carlos III of Madrid, the Ramon Llull University, the University of Navarra and the European University of Madrid lead this ranking.

To grant a certain score in the teaching section, among other issues, quality, the number of teachers per student, the dropout rate, and the budget per student are measured. In this Item, UR does not fare badly and is ranked number 4.

In terms of research and innovation, for whose classification public resources allocated to research, patents, theses and European funds have been compared, none of the regional universities are in the top positions. The UR is in 9th place and the UNIR is in 14th. The Universitat Pompeu Fabra, the Autonomous University of Barcelona and the Polytechnic of Catalonia appear on the podium.

In the analysis of public and private, the latter obtain a considerably higher grade than the former in teaching, while the opposite is true in research.

Regional differences

By community, the results show large differences in performance between regional systems, reaching 35 percentage points. The most powerful systems are the Catalan one, which includes 11 of the universities analyzed in U-Ranking, and the Cantabrian one – with only one university) – which obtain performance indices that are 15% and 8% above the average, respectively. . Among those with below-average returns is our community.

From the UR, they highlight that the campus “maintains its stability in this ranking, which corresponds to the stability of internal data, both with teaching focused on personal attention to the student and with research whose indicators evolve positively.”

From the study, Juan José Sobrino, director of Quality at UNIR, highlighted yesterday that the campus “has once again managed to be the young university (

From the university “we value this result as another outstanding example of the good work of its students, teachers and administrative staff, because the results are not the result of chance, but of planned and coordinated work that this ranking and the indicators it measures are capable of reflect”.
