Suspension Bridge: the city’s greatest icon turns 96 years old

On June 8, but in 1928, the Hanging Bridge was inaugurated and since then it would become the maximum icon of the city of Santa Fe. Present on all postcards and a mandatory stop for tourists, this emblem of the provincial capital turns 96 years of life.

A single main part of the structure witnessed all its stages. At 30 meters high, the “west antenna”, this structure remained standing after the great flood of 1983 and was part of the new construction of the bridge, thus remaining standing for almost a century in a construction adopted as cultural heritage of the people of Santa Fe.

It arose from the need to have a crossing that crosses the waterway of the Setúbal lagoon. The engineer Marcial Candioti devised this structure based on the principles of traditional suspension bridges but it meant an unprecedented construction in the region.

It managed to withstand large floods, until tragedy occurred in 1983 with the collapse of the metal giant. It currently has a total length of approximately 295 meters and a maximum height of approximately 30 meters at each antenna.

The reconstruction process of the entire structure was carried out with several pieces that were part of the original bridge. The rest of the structural components of the bridge were built to resemble the original pieces.

After years of abandonment, its reconstruction in 2002 was an act of justice for this Santa Fe giant. Today he celebrates 96 years of full life and regained that status of icon and emblem that he should never have lost.
