The United States ruled out that the arrival at the port of Havana of three Russian ships and a nuclear submarine, between June 12 and 17, represents a direct threat to its security considering that they are part of Russia’s regular military maneuvers.

“Russia’s deployments are part of routine naval activity and do not worry us as they do not represent a direct threat to the United States,” official sources stated.

The Department of Defense has planned that Russia will carry out “intense naval activity near the United States in the summer” that could culminate in a global exercise in the fall.

This naval activity would include calls by Russian ships in ports in Cuba and possibly also in Venezuela, as well as some air exercises in the Caribbean.

However, Pentagon sources stressed that this “is far from the first time that Russia sails through the Caribbean or stops in Cuba,” exercises that have occurred regularly since the George W. Bush Administration (2001- 2009) until today.

In addition, they pointed out that the United States expects more Russian military exercises to take place in this area in the future “due to American support for Ukraine.”

The Cuban Foreign Ministry reported in a statement that the visit “corresponds with the historical relations of friendship between Cuba and the Russian Federation” and that it strictly complies with the international regulations signed by Havana.

“None of the ships carry nuclear weapons, so their stopover in our country does not represent a threat to the region,” clarified the Cuban Foreign Ministry, which also indicated that “visits by naval units from other countries are a historical practice.”

The ships that make up the Russian naval detachment are, according to the Cuban Government statement, the frigate Gorshkovthe nuclear powered submarine Kazanthe fleet’s oil tanker Pashin and the rescue tug Nikolai Chiker.
