This coming week begins Chile Cup 2024the second most important Chilean soccer tournament of the season, which will have Colo Colo looking to defend the title. The Albos enjoy their last days of vacation before returning to training at the Monumental Stadium, to prepare the key against Sports Quillón for the round of 16 of the regional phase.

Both the Cacique and the rest of the professional Chilean soccer clubs must comply with the youth sub 21 standard, which also applies to the National Championship. However, for this 2024 edition of the Chile Cup there is an important and curious change regarding the youth rule.

Article 31 of the tournament regulations indicates that On the scoresheet for each match there must be four “youth players”: two born after January 1, 2003, and two born after January 1, 2001. This only applies to First Division, Promotion and Second Professional clubs, so amateur clubs such as Deportes Quillón are exempt.

Regarding the minutes on the field for the youth players, the ANFP drafted an unusual rule: “In each match played in the Chile Cup, the teams must include on the field, at any time during the match, at least two Chilean players born on or after January 1, 2001, who must play, together, a minimum of 130 minutes of play“. In this way, coaches are obliged to have two 23-year-old “youths” complete 130 minutes on the field, in an unusual rule for soccer players who have, or should have, some experience in professionalism.

What was the minute rule for youth players in the 2023 Chile Cup?

Chilean soccer players who are up to 23 years old must be included compulsorily to comply with the regulations of the Chile Cup, even though In the National Championship, minutes are required for players 21 years of age or younger.

In the regulations of the 2023 edition of the Chile Cup, the rule was similar to that of the national tournament: “In each match played in the Chile Cup, each team must include on the field, at any time of the match, at least two Chilean players born on or after January 1, 2002 (21 years old), who must play, together, a minimum of 130 minutes of play.”

How the “youth” status was changed and increased in the Chile Cup, Jorge Almirón will be able to comply with the minutes rule on the field with players such as Vicente Pizarro, Alexander Oroz, Lucas Cepeda, Bruno Gutiérrez, Jeyson Rojas (born after January 1, 2001). Of course, two under 21 players (born after January 1, 2003) who are not required to play must be included on the roster, such as Lucas Soto, Leandro Hernández, Daniel Gutiérrez, Diego Plaza, among others.
