This Monday, June 10, at 10:55 am, a noticeable earthquake shook the city of Santiago de Cuba, causing concern among its inhabitants. According to information spread on social networks, the tremor was also felt in other provinces in eastern Cuba, including Guantánamo, Granma and Holguín.
The National Seismological Service (Cenais) is currently collecting detailed information about this seismic event. According to the local newspaper Sierra Maestra, the earthquake had a magnitude of 4.3 on the Richter scale and its epicenter was located seven kilometers southeast of Santiago de Cuba. The depth of the earthquake was 25.5 kilometers, located at the coordinates 19.95 degrees north latitude and -75.83 degrees west longitude, as reported by Dr. Enrique Arango, Head of the National Seismological Service, on his Facebook profile.
Dr. Arango highlighted that so far reports of perceptibility have been received in several locations in the provinces of Santiago de Cuba, Guantánamo, Granma and Holguín. Fortunately, no material or human damage has been reported until the closing of this information. “This is the perceptible earthquake No. 9 of the year 2024,” added the specialist, underlining the need to be prepared for future seismic events in the region.
The population of Santiago de Cuba and the surrounding provinces reacted with concern, but without panic. Many residents shared their experiences on social networks, describing how they felt the earth movement and the characteristic sound that accompanies these natural phenomena.
