La Rioja is the province where public debt grew the most: 180.5% in 2023

A report from the consulting firm Politikon Chaco provides an overview of the public debt situation in the Argentine provinces during the year 2023

Significant Increase: The provincial public debt reached $17,861,219 million, marking the highest level in a decade, with a real increase of 79.2% compared to the previous year.



Impact of Devaluation: The December devaluation drove the rise, especially since the majority of the debt was denominated in dollars, which resulted in a significant increase in pesos.



Relationship to GDP: Debt represented 9.4% of GDP in 2023, a considerable jump from 5.2% in 2022.


Debt by Jurisdiction: Buenos Aires, Córdoba and CABA had the largest stocks of debt in current pesos, while La Rioja registered the largest relative annual increase with 180.5%.
