The Colombian Geological Service has reported an increase in the activity of the Nevado del Huila volcano, which has led to maintaining the yellow alert. The Huila Disaster Risk Management Office has also reported an increase in the flow of the Páez River. AlthoughSince a direct relationship between volcanic activity and the increase in flow has not been confirmed, strict monitoring of both situations is being carried out.

The technical professional of the Huila Disaster Risk Management Office, Juan Sebastián Samboni indicated that there are several possible causes for the rise in the river level, such as melting glaciers, landslides, lahars (flows of mud and volcanic debris), and the release of groundwater. In the latest report from the Colombian Geological Service, the presence of large amounts of mud in the Páez River was highlighted and the yellow alert was reiterated, urging communities to keep their contingency plans updated.

The Nevado del Huila volcano has a history of significant events, such as the eruptions of February 19 and April 18, 2007, and November 20, 2008., which generated lahars affecting the Páez River valley. The avalanche of June 6, 1994, caused by an earthquake that caused multiple landslides in the Páez River basin, is also remembered. The authorities recommend that communities in the area of influence be prepared and know the actions to follow in the event of possible volcanic or lahar threats.
