“The most significant improvement was recorded in third grade primary leveldue to the literacy strategy that has been maintained for some time, where there were an improvement of 30 percentage points compared to last year. There is also a 9-point sixth grade improvement percentages of fewer critical level students, and in the first year of high school there are 6 percentage points also less critical,” the minister reported.

“These are encouraging data that mean that there is very good work in Mendoza schools, both state and privately managed. We aspire to reinforce strategies in schools that have lower indicators, since we access information for each particular institution and degree. We know where we need to reinforce content, teaching materials and training.”

García Zalazar stated that this census of reading fluency and comprehension, which is carried out in more than 320,000 level students primary and secondary, it is the largest operation carried out in the country, after the national Learn tests. “We are very happy, because Mendoza has a system that is different from the rest of the country. All the measurements we make are presented at the end of the year in the provincial Legislature and were established in the Provincial Literacy Law to account for the educational actions and improvements that we apply,” concluded the minister.

The greater the reading fluency, the greater the comprehension.

The fluency and reading comprehension census was carried out in May and this instance is repeated with another measurement in August and the last in Novemberwhere students from third and sixth grade and first year of high school from state and private schools.

In this first measurement there was record coverage, and 319,198 students from 1,255 schools were reached, which represents 91% of enrollment.

In the year-on-year comparison, the percentage of students with a critical level made significant progress in the third grade of primary school, dropping 30 percentage points; an improvement in the sixth grade of primary school, dropping 9 percentage points, and an improvement in the first year of secondary school, dropping 6 percentage points.

This year, reading fluency and comprehension were measured in a smaller sample in the schools of Mendoza.

The school government reported that the greater the reading fluency, the better the results in reading comprehension. In third grade, 84% of advanced level students answered more than half of the questions correctly. Meanwhile, 52% of students with critical performance answered up to two questions correctly.

In this first measurement, 869 primary schools and 386 secondary schools participated. 191,246 boys and girls in third and sixth grade of primary school, 92,484 first-year students from oriented secondary schools and 35,468 students from technical schools were evaluated.

The director of Educational Quality Evaluation, Romina Durán, explained that after the students read for the census, they had time to rereading and answered questions related to three cognitive processes fundamental for reading comprehension: obtaining information, interpretation and evaluation and reflection.

“In this framework, we were able to notice that the greater the reading fluency, the greater the understanding. This allows us to know how to accompany each student, continue strengthening the levels of critical students and accompany the understanding processes. These advances that students register in reading comprehension are transferred to all areas of knowledge,” Durán highlighted.
